I remember when a stink bug kept me out of my house because it decided to do the tap dance on my doorknob. Anyway here's the southern green stink bug.

Bat & Bug
Of course this was the kind of day for Bug to find a beige bat hanging upside down from his favourite downtime branch. Well, he supposed if ever there was a time to risk approaching an insect-eater, it would be now, because he really needed some branch time, and this particular bat wasn’t that much larger than Bug, so surely it would be fine.
“Too young!” Bug scoffed out loud. “Let’s see what happens when they discard our skills just because we’re small, am I right, Bat? Can you believe my family won’t let me defend the castle for no better reason than the fact I’m only in my third form? As if metamorphosis has gained them so much wisdom!”
The bat said nothing, yet Bug felt like finally someone had listened to him, and the two of them spent their time on the branch in companionable silence until Bug’s uncle called out: “Hey, Bug!”, and crawled up to join them.
“Why, you were right, my boy—many others your age would have seen something bat-shaped and bolted, but you recognised a mere seed pod for what it was. Congratulations on your position as a defender of the castle!”
Bug never told him how those words transformed his view of his new friend.

It sits on the base of a soft-haired, beige to khaki seed pod, which hangs from a branch of a marshmallow plant. More to the left on the photo is another beige seed pod which has opened further, resembling the shape of the round body of a tiny bat with long ears and a wing on either side. Out-of-focus green leaves make up the background.]

just got shown up on the bug knowledge app (TM) about my bug knowledge. may never recover from the very clearly and firmly laid out reasoning why someone disagrees with my specific stink bug species identification from someone's single blurry photo. avenge me, etc.
#i thought it was Nezara viridula and even laid out why it wasn't Chinavia hilaris (very difficult - they look identical)#and some smarmy bug knowledge guy is like 'well actually it's Cuspicona simplex' and says like seven words i'd have to look up in a very-#specific encyclopaedia about it#like yr right but Okay 🙄🙃#(he wasn't smarmy i'm just wounded by my overconfidence)#me#ramble

this is the nymph of a southern green stink bug (Nezara viridula). these are invasive pests in a lot of countries, but i rarely see them, so i don't know what their populations are really like out here. adults look very similar to several native species, but the nymphs are very distinctive with their pink markings

#2210 - Glaucias amyoti - New Zealand Vegetable Bug
AKA Rhaphigaster amyoti, Zangis stali, and Australasian Green Shield Bug.
A minor agricultural pest found in NZ, Australia, New Guinea, Timor and Indonesia. The adults are, as you might guess from the other common name, green.
Eggs may be parasitised by two species of tiny wasp belonging to the family Platygasteridae - Trissolcus oenone, native to New Zealand, and Trissolcus basalis released into New Zealand in 1949 to control the green vegetable bug, Nezara viridula. When this wider host range was discovered in the 1960s, it was regarded as beneficial because protection of crops was considered more important than protecting native insects.
The braconid wasp Aridelus rufotestaceus is also a parasitoid of the green vegetable bug, targeting the nymphs, but like T. basalis above has also been reared from the New Zealand Vegetable Bug.

Monteithiella humeralis, commonly known as the pittosporum shield bug is a species of herbivorous shield bug native to Australia and introduced in New Zealand. As its common name suggests, it is most commonly observed feeding on Pittosporum plants,
Order:Hemiptera
Family:Pentatomidae
Tribe:Carpocorini
Genus:Monteithiella
The name "Pentatomidae" is from the Greek pente meaning "five" and tomos meaning "section", and refers to the five segments of their antennae.
In some species, the smell liquid contains cyanide compounds and a rancid almond scent. :-[ ]
In Mexico, some species of stink bugs are called jumil, chinche de monte, xotlinilli, or chumil (e.g. Edessa mexicana).
Nezara viridula.

Research finding nearly 700 proteins in the saliva of five stink bug species illustrates the complex biochemical conflict between plants and insects.
Stink Bug Saliva: A Potent Mix to Bypass Plant Defenses

Salivary protein expression profiles of five species of Pentatomidae (Hemiptera) - Annals of the Entomological Society of America, 22.07.2023
Abstract
Stink bug (Hemiptera: Pentatomidae) development typically requires feeding on a diversity of plant species and various plant tissues. During feeding, stink bugs discharge salivary enzymes with roles in extraoral digestion and countering plant defense responses. Although previous research has described digestive salivary proteins from stink bugs, less is known of the salivary proteins involved in the suppression of plant defenses. We sequenced the transcriptomes of salivary glands dissected from five stink bug species collected from non-crop habitats in Washington: Halyomorpha halys (Stål), Nezara viridula L., Euschistus conspersus (Uhler), Thyanta pallidovirens (Stål), and Chlorochroa ligata (Say). We identified a total of 677 candidate secreted proteins from the salivary glands of the five species. Based on work from other insects, many of the proteins have potential functions in the suppression of plant defense signaling and deactivation of plant defense molecules. We also identified salivary proteins with potential roles in the extraoral digestion of plant tissues, protection from entomopathogens, and deposition of salivary sheaths. This report provides a curation of putative salivary effector genes for further functional analysis.
